Whenever I walk through freshly ploughed fields or spend time on a beach, I have one eye open for pottery shards. Sometimes I find or am given a battered old plate with a nice pattern, and I cut it up without feeling guilty. The best places to go for old pottery are Victorian dumps, but the ones I know of are spread far and wide, and I don't often get a chance to visit them.
